GRADUATE PROGRAMS

The Neuroscience Institute admits students into a program leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.  A Master of Science is earned en route to the Neuroscience Ph.D. degree.  The Neuroscience Institute is affiliated with multiple departments and emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to graduate training.

Neuroscience Institute Faculty and Resources.

Using state of the art facilities and equipment, Neuroscience Institute faculty are actively engaged in basic research that ranges from molecular, cellular and computational to behavioral.  Students accepted into the Neuroscience Institute doctoral program may work with Core or Associate faculty members.

The Neuroscience Institute currently has 16 core faculty members.  Their nationally recognized research programs and efforts in training neuroscience students are supported by the Institute, as well as by many external grants supporting research and educational activities. These core faculty all also have an affiliation with one of Georgia State’s traditional academic departments, including Biology, Psychology, and Math and Statistics.  More than 40 faculty members in seven departments (Biology, Psychology, Math and Statistics, Computer Science, Philosophy, Physics and Astronomy, and Chemistry) are Associate members of the Neuroscience Institute. They participate in the Institute's neuroscience activities and are its partners in advancing the Institute’s research and educational goals.

Incoming students may elect to work with a particular faculty mentor or may chose to rotate between two or three laboratories during the first year.  All Ph.D. students are supported by stipends and tuition waivers, which can be supplemented by research grants.  The Neuroscience Institute offers many additional opportunities for students to gain experience and knowledge.  For instance, students are provided with teaching opportunities and can attend neuroscience-based presentations offered through brown bag lunches, journal clubs, and speaker series

Atlanta Resources.

In addition to the research faculty on campus, there are opportunities for collaboration with researchers at Emory University, Georgia Tech, Morehouse School of Medicine, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).  Atlanta has thriving Neuroscience community and an active Chapter of the Society for Neuroscience.  In addition, neuroscience researchers from the major Atlanta universities are brought together through the Center for Behavioral Neurosience (CBN).
