UNDERGRADUATE VIRTUAL MACHINES
Neuroscience Technology hosts a number of virtual machines for undergraduate courses. These VMs are persistent: that is, they do not get deleted upon log out like GSU's vLab. They are personal computers that can be accessed from anywhere via Microsoft Remote Desktop or through Neuroscience's remote desktop gateway Guacamole.
If you are using macOS you may want to install Microsoft's Remote Desktop app.
Guacamole
- Navigate to https://guac.ni.gsu.edu
- Recommended browser Google Chrome
- Sign in using your campus ID and campus password
- Do not sign in using your email address. For example, use "jdoe1" without quotes
- If you get the error 'Invalid Login' first be sure you can successfully sign in at https://campusid.gsu.edu
- When finished you can Log Out of Windows, Disconnect, or simply close the window

Microsoft Remote Desktop (Automatic)
- If you are off-campus connect to GSU's Virtual Private Network (VPN)
- Download RDP file associated with your assigned VM ## (for example: NI-LAB34-LSDC.rdp) from https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fo/wt0ttq4mcgng2jj9c942v/h?rlkey=hq90ol5bd4tcos50to713nu0j&dl=0
- Ask your instructor or Neuroscience Technology (email [email protected]) what your assigned VM number is if you do not know it
- Double-click or open the RDP file you downloaded to automatically launch your Remote Desktop program
- Sign in using your campus ID and campus password
- Do not sign in using your email address. For example, use "jdoe1" without quotes
- When finished you can Log Out of Windows, Disconnect, or simply close the window

Microsoft Remote Desktop (Manual)
- If you are off-campus first connect to GSU's Virtual Private Network (VPN)
- Open either the Windows Microsoft Remote Desktop app (search Start Menu for "Remote Desktop Connection") or macOS Microsoft Remote Desktop app
- Enter the Computer Name as "NI-LAB##-LSDC.ni.gsu.edu" without quotes and replacing ## with your assigned VM number
- Sign in using your campus ID and campus password
- Do not sign in using your email address. For example, use "jdoe1" without quotes
- When finished you can Log Out of Windows, Disconnect, or simply close the window

FAQ
Like GSU's vLab it is recommended to utilize Microsoft OneDrive either through the Microsoft Office desktop apps or via its web client.
Alternatively, with smaller file transfers, you can email yourself.
If relevant to your project, files can be sent directly to your professor using their GSU Send a File 'Filedrop' link:
Dr. Cymbalyuk: https://sendafile.gsu.edu/filedrop/[email protected]
Dr. Letcher: https://sendafile.gsu.edu/filedrop/[email protected]
Dr. Clark: https://sendafile.gsu.edu/filedrop/[email protected]
Guacamole is easier to use while Microsoft Remote Desktop offers more advanced features like accessing your local computer's local drives.
Yes! Refer to the Disconnection Types outlined here: https://neuroscience.gsu.edu/about/tech/guacamole/. The only time any programs left running will be closed is if you Log Out or during scheduled maintenance.
Scheduled maintenance may occur which will be communicated in advance via your instructor or Neuroscience Technology. To avoid loss of work pay attention to them and be sure to Log Out or at least save and close any open programs.
First, ensure the software you need isn't already installed. All or most software you need for your course should be pre-installed.
Second, search Start Menu for 'Software Center' and open it. Software Center is a curated app store with many one-click installers.
On their VMs students are standard users without Admin Rights. Instructors have Admin Rights if they are needed to install/update instructional software.
