B&B PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AWARD
Fellows are eligible for an annual B&B Professional Development Award (PDA) up to $500*.
Some students choose to use this money to support travel to conferences to present their work, while others may decide to use their PDA for training or another professional development activity or item. Importantly, PDA funds can only be used to improve your skills, knowledge, and competence in your field of study and/or future career.
Please read below and make sure to follow instructions carefully.
Fellows presenting their research at an upcoming conference as a first author or second author behind their principal investigator (PI) are eligible to use their PDA for travel. These students can skip to STEP 3. For students who would like to travel using PDA funds who are not presenting at a conference must start at STEP 1.
- AIRBNB & VRBO are not eligible for travel reimbursement.
- If your conference provides food, please be advised you must write a memo if you claim food on your expense statement.
WORKFLOW
Before Travel
- STEP 1: Send Liz Weaver a concise email explaining in two paragraphs how this travel will improve your skills, knowledge, and competence in your field of study and/or future career.
- STEP 2: Wait for email approval from Liz Weaver to proceed to STEP 3.
- STEP 3: Print out a Travel Authorization Form 3 or more weeks before you travel.
- STEP 4: Fill out all pertinent information and send the Travel Authorization to Monica Barnes ([email protected]) and tell her where the money is coming from to fund your trip. She will route your form to all the budget approvers for those money sources.
After Travel
- STEP 5: Print out In-State Travel Expense Statement or Out-of-State Travel Expense Statement and have your P.I. sign where appropriate.
- STEP 6: Send your completed Travel Expense Report to Monica Barnes ([email protected]).
Fellows who choose not to spend their PDA funds on travel are eligible for B&B non-travel related PDA funds in awards up to $500.

Before purchasing anything, please follow the steps below.
- STEP 1: Send Liz Weaver a concise email explaining in two paragraphs how you would like to use your funds and how the PDA will improve your skills, knowledge, and competence in your field of study and/or future career.
- STEP 2: Receive approval via email.
- STEP 3: Pay for items.
- STEP 4: Fill out this Payment Request Form for reimbursement and send to Monica Barnes ([email protected]).
